Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a painless test that uses a magnetic field and pulses of radio waves to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, and bones. MRI of the breast offers valuable information that may not be obtained through standard mammography or ultrasound.
MRI is an excellent tool for women with dense breast tissue and those at high risk for breast cancer.
Though used mostly in the diagnosis and staging of cancer, the American Cancer Society recommends MRIs alongside mammograms for some high-risk and genetically predisposed patients.
Because radiation is not used, there is no risk of exposure to radiation during an MRI procedure.
