Emergency Department

The Emergency Department (ED) is a specialized area of the hospital designed to care for patients with acute illnesses or injuries. Specially trained physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and registered nurses are available to provide care in all areas 24-hours a day.

The Emergency Department houses four specialized areas that provide expert care for a variety of patients:

  • Chest Pain ER
  • Minor Care ER
  • Major Care ER
  • Pediatric ER

Chest Pain Emergency Room
The Chest Pain Emergency Room (ER) is a sophisticated facility staffed with specially trained nurses and physicians. Open 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week, the Chest Pain ER is designed to quickly evaluate people who are suffering chest pain or any of the other symptoms of a heart attack.

Minor Care
Minor Care offers a variety of treatments for patients with less acute emergencies.

Major Care ER
Major Care provides comprehensive treatment to patients with acute emergencies.

Pediatric Emergency Room
The Pediatric Emergency Room (ER) at University Community Hospital not only has "children only" waiting and treatment rooms, it has pediatric specialists who have received extensive training in treating pediatric emergencies. Likewise, the nursing staff of the Pediatric Emergency Room also have received special training in caring for pediatric emergency cases.

What to Expect as a Patient in the ED
Upon arrival to the ED, patients are assessed by a triage nurse. Triage, a French word that means "to sort," helps ensure that patients with the most serious needs are treated first.

Based on the triage process, patients are transported to the treatment area and are seen by the ER physician. Lab tests and X-rays may be ordered by the physician to assist in diagnosing the patient and arriving at a decision regarding any further treatment, admission or discharge.
