Nursing Scholarships
Thanks to the generosity of a few, UCH is proud to offer our employees four scholarships annually. We are extremely grateful to the Chandra, Schwarzbach, and Whitfield families for their dedication to the nursing profession. Scholarship recipients are selected based on financial need and their desire to advance their education in the nursing profession.

Sumesh Chandra, M.D., approached the UCH Foundation in 1997 to establish the Chandra Nurse Advancement & Merit Scholarship Endowment. Dr. Chandra, an endocrinologist at UCH, believes very passionately in promoting a career in health care and enjoys the opportunity to offer assistance to others as he was offered assistance during his education. There have been 12 awards made by Dr. Chandra in the past nine years.

Mr. Ronald Schwarzbach and his family established the Audrey Schwarzbach Nursing Scholarship Endowment in 2003. Mrs. Schwarzbach was a patient on 5 West for several months. Her husband visited her daily, and was so inspired by the care and compassion she was shown, he and their three children established a $25,000 endowment as a memorial to Mrs. Schwarzbach’s "never give up" spirit. This is the third year the Schwarzbach Nursing Scholarship Endowment has been awarded.

Jeri Whitfield had been a patient at UCH many times in recent years. When Jeri died in 2004, her husband, Robert, wanted to assist the nurses; and, in his wife’s honor, established the Jeri Whitfield Scholarship for Nurses. Two scholarships ($1,000 each) will be offered each year until the funds are exhausted. This is the second year that the Whitfield Scholarships were awarded.
